Saturdays in the valley: why your transfer takes longer
If you take one thing from this article: a Saturday transfer in winter is not the same journey as a Tuesday one. Same distance, same road, but you need to leave earlier. Here is why, and by how much.
The day the valley changes tenants
Almost every chalet and apartment in the valley runs Saturday to Saturday. In the morning, stays end and everyone comes down. In the afternoon, the new arrivals go back up. Between the two, the valley empties and refills within a few hours.
Both flows use the same road, in both directions, in a tight window. This is not accidental congestion: it is a weekly appointment, visible on the calendar.
What it means in practice
Between Megeve and Geneva Airport I allow one hour fifteen in normal conditions. Between December and April, on a Saturday, I allow one hour forty-five, sometimes two hours.
During school holidays — French and Swiss, which do not always fall together — add another thirty minutes. The changeover weekends, when one region comes down while another goes up, are the busiest of the season.
European flight at 14:00, a Tuesday in January.
Leave Megeve around 10:30.
The same flight, a Saturday in February.
Leave around 10:00, sometimes 09:45.
The pinch points
The downhill flow concentrates in the late morning, when properties have to be vacated. The uphill flow spreads from midday into the early evening, with a clear peak in mid-afternoon.
A very early departure, before any of it begins, stays clear. That is why so many of our Saturday transfers leave before seven: it is not only the flight time, it is also the only quiet window of the day.
What can be done, and what cannot
Saturday traffic cannot be removed. It can, in part, be worked around: leaving earlier, knowing the windows, and knowing when another route is worth taking.
That is local knowledge rather than arithmetic. An app tells you the state of the road at the moment you look, not what it will be in two hours — I go into that at more length in the article on what time to leave Megeve for a flight from Geneva.
If you can choose your day
Few people can, since the rental calendar sets the rhythm. But if your stay allows some latitude, a Friday or a Sunday morning departure is almost always easier than a Saturday in high season.
And if you cannot choose, it does not matter: you simply need to know in advance and set the departure time accordingly.
Send us your date and flight number and we will work out the departure time, taking the day, the season and the school holiday calendar on both sides of the border into account.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I allow on a Saturday between Megeve and Geneva Airport?
Allow 1 h 45 to 2 h between December and April, against 1 h 15 in normal conditions. During school holidays, add a further thirty minutes.
Why is Saturday busier than other days?
Because almost all rentals in the valley run Saturday to Saturday. Departures concentrate in the late morning and arrivals in the afternoon, on the same road and in both directions.
What is the best window to leave on a Saturday?
Early morning, before properties start being vacated. It is the clearest window of the day, which is why many of our Saturday transfers leave before seven.
Do school holidays make a difference?
Yes, a marked one. French regions and Swiss cantons do not always break at the same time, and the overlapping weekends are the busiest of the season.
Should I avoid travelling on a Saturday?
Not at all. You simply need to bring the departure time forward. Most stays impose Saturday anyway, and a well-planned transfer runs without difficulty.
