Skiing Chamonix when you are staying in Megeve
A great many stays in Megeve include a day in Chamonix. The two valleys are neighbours without adjoining: thirty-five kilometres, about forty-five minutes via Sallanches and the Autoroute Blanche. Close enough to go for the day, and far enough that the planning matters.
Why people go
Megeve and Chamonix do not offer the same mountain. Megeve has a broad, sunny area that is a pleasure to ski as a family. Chamonix has verticality, high-alpine terrain and a mountaineering atmosphere that exists nowhere else.
Many skiers want both in the same week. It is entirely feasible — it is one of our most frequent winter requests.
The question of timing
Everything turns on the departure time. A day in Chamonix is decided in the morning: the first lifts, the light, and the snow before it gets worked over.
Leaving Megeve at half past seven changes the day completely compared with leaving at half past nine. On a short road the difference comes not from the drive but from what you find on arrival: parking, lift queues, crowds.
Full day, midweek.
Leave around 07:30, return late afternoon.
A day during school holidays.
Leave earlier still. The Chamonix valley fills quickly in high season.
Arrange the return before you set off
This is the classic mistake: the outward journey is planned and the return improvised. At the end of the day everyone leaves at once, and finding a vehicle in Chamonix at five o’clock on a Saturday is a matter of luck.
A return trip is set at the time of booking, with an agreed pick-up time. It can be moved — your driver stays reachable — but it exists.
Equipment
Skis, snowboards, helmets, boots: all of it travels at no extra charge in a van. That is a detail right up until you try to fit it into a saloon car, or carry it onto a shuttle.

Another way to look at the day
Some of our clients do not ski in Chamonix at all. They go for the Aiguille du Midi, for lunch, for the view, while the rest of the family skis in Megeve. The logistics are the same and the timing is more relaxed.
Either way the route is the same: Megeve ⇄ Chamonix, door to door, with no parking to find.
